In today’s ever-changing world, the redevelopment of a private home turning into a comfortable place to play and entertain, allows new meaning to the family staycation to be right in their backyard.  Pools, spas, elaborate grills, screened-in porches, patios, and decks are being sold at a record pace and creating long lead times. The world wants to stay home and play and make their yard feel like a special place.

Your special place can consist of multiple different added features that create the feel that you are not at home but in a special place yet be in your backyard.  Example of this is a waterfront home that has the ability to use God’s gift of oceans, rivers, lakes and bays.  The same feeling can occur in the mountains or country hills with views of expanded valleys with magnificent tree colors and shapes.  Your home can also be in a city or town environment in the front yard and the backyard being on the water makes it a relaxing resort, beach front or a mini marina in your back yard. Stepping out to a deck or patio area that has a clear view of the water, beach, docks, or rocky shores changes one’s attitude – you stop thinking about work, life and day-to-day issues and start to relax.

Not all homes have these views and use of nature’s beauty to create ponds and spectacular landscaping and plantings.  With the addition of hardscapes and water, the backyard creates the birth of your own resort.  Water can be in many forms; pools, spas, waterfalls, fountains, streams – man-made or unless nature has already blessed the property with the same.  Some extreme yards include: tennis courts, basketball courts, horseshoe pits, bocce ball areas, Playsets and barbeque areas.

This basically describes most family backyards that have added features to get the feeling of total relaxation and family fun. But it’s not the same as a total resort feel, nor the same as natural beauty scenery; this requires more thought, a great design and talented construction.

Let’s now describe the resort feel that you have experienced in Florida, California, Arizona, Hawaii, Bahamas and Caribbean.  Resorts are created to provide their clients with a choice of total relaxation and separation from at-home activities that require little effort or strength or brainpower.  They stimulate your senses of touch, sight, smell, hearing and taste. Added to this is relaxation from what your senses project.

The resorts do this with sand, wind, salt water, sun, pools, spas, waterfalls, rivers, slides, beach, boating, swimming, sailing, diving, snorkeling, surfing,   shade structures, hammocks, lounges, cabanas, gazebos, fire pits, horse shoes, shuffleboard, bocce ball, croquet, golf, tennis, volleyball (water and dry), basketball (water and dry), swim-up bars, in-pool lounging pads, seat and benches.  Some may even add fishponds.  The resorts may also offer fine dining inside and out and on the beach, grill-type pool food at the beach and grill areas…also ice cream, specialty drinks, music and entertainment. Of course, you cannot do all of this in your backyard and never to the scale of a resort or you would be a resort.  But you can add most of this with a little creativity.

The home will be Mediterranean style with Italian décor.  We developed a pool that has pure white large Italian long coping, slate colored tile edge and a black pebble Tec finish.  We’re adding 4 areas of resort type activities to the pool with separate sections connected together to save costs. Short of a 4-leaf clover with a stem, each section creates a different activity.  The stem is developed into a zero entry area.  One cove is an open flowing current pool with in-water volleyball and in-water basketball areas.  Small islands were added to control the flow of water and to support the basketball and volleyball nets.  These islands also support in-pool seating or player rest areas.

The second cove is a receiving pool for two small water slides that offer the challenge of racing with family members.  The next cove has in-pool lounging pads and stair access to the deeper portion of the pool.  Padded floats were added and were placed in the area for headrests.

The fourth cove offers waterfalls and a raised pool beam creating a grotto effect and a center island fire pit surrounded by a seating area allowing bathers to sit in 12” of water.  Leading out to the zero entry are two long step areas for seating as the seats are two feet wide.  On the turn of the pool is a swim-up bar with in-pool seating and a glass lit bar top that changes colors at night with the pool water. We introduced several clay planters along the pool edge that had Lamar Flow nozzles that were also lit at night.  Music was tied into the home system and underwater pool speakers added to provide an atmosphere while swimming.  An outdoor television was added to the bar and wood accents were added to the firepit. Surrounding the pool is a paver decking. Two fabric cabanas, beautiful palm trees supporting two hammocks with sail shades above provide shade to the hammocks.

The pool bar on the land side has three hanging rope swing chairs tethered with a swing support system that allows for your feet to dangle.  The bar is for grilled food and drink of the owner’s choice. Naturally being in Florida we’re adding a mister and chilled water spray for a cooling effect when needed at the pool lounges.

The zero entry backed up to the home’s back door that leads to the pool area with an extended balcony covered area providing a perfect spot to add a pull down (remote) giant screen with rear projection movies, while floating or lounging in the pool.  Your own Private “Dive-in movie theatre”.

The pool is a beautiful Mediterranean beach club during the day and transforms into a fantastic pool party or entertainment area at night. The lighting is magnificent and provides a great look from the house when not in use.
